PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Final

Final Animation 2 from Ififya on Vimeo.

Character was inspired from Alexander Calder's sculptures. My character turned out to be quite similar to a spider form but with four legs. I was trying to go for cute and at the same time simplistic look.

As for the environment I was going for desert kind of feel.

The creature lands on this world where nothing exists but a flat landscape. Until it existed in this plane world, the environment transformation is dependent on the creature.

As the creature lands on the plane, it altered the plane into hills. When creature started to explore by walking, stacks of blocks were created. Eventually the creature faints by the scorching sun. By it's suffering, natural vines started to grow showing a tribute or respect to the creature. In doing so, a peaceful environment world was created and another creature's existence was seen.

Overall pretty happy with the outcome since I have covered my basic intentions. Though I could have improved on many aspects of this project like adding more details and exaggerating more on design objects.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Modelling and Animation

This is a model of a butterfly using planes and a butterfly image.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Animation 3

This project is just turning into trial and error. This 3ds max plug in called Guruware: Ivy was also annoying. So many times I failed to get the vines to grow the way I wanted. I had to adjust the numbers so many times to get the distance, thickness and variations of the growth because my scale of the objects were just too big.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Animation 2

As for reactor in 3ds max was frustrating. I had to do a lot of trial and error in order for my blocks to stack on top of each other. My idea was making sure the blocks stacked on top of each other by purely physics and without deleting any parts to the key frames. Since my surface was not flat, figuring out the counter weights was just time consuming. Eventually I had to cut out some of the key frames to show the stacked blocks.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Animation

Animating the character's walk movement on hills took ridiculously long time and very time consuming. The difficult part was making sure the movement was smooth and legs don't overlap with the body.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Audio

I found an audio piece that I could use it for this project from http://freemusicarchive.org. It is an electronic/Hip-Hop genre and this would fit quite well with the movements in the animation since there were heavy and electronic beats.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Storyboard

My idea is about a creation by a creature that was inspired by a spider. I wanted to portray the character as destruction to this non-living environment but at the same time it is creating something from nothing and turning into a peaceful atmosphere.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Character

Started modelling my character. I had a major issue in terms of how I was going to animate my character. The movement of the legs and the bone structure was not moving the way I wanted it to be. Some of the joints have been bending more than I expected. I need to refer back to the bone structures and movements before applying skins to the character. Besides that it is taking forever to do the character.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Research

I have been looking at different videos to get some inspirations. In this video the build up of blocks is very interesting. I want to incorporate this into my build up of the environment but using reactor.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Reactor Test

I have been playing around with the reactor in 3ds Max and testing out different settings to figure out which function does what. The following video is a test using reactor.

PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Precedents

Alexander Calder
In Alexander Calder's sculptures, he uses ingenious system of weights and counterbalances in order them to stand or hang. This was influenced by the circus. Also his work consists with abstract forms and sharp edges with pointy ends.

Lebbus Woods
He is known for his creative illustrations. His drawing ignores the traditions of architectural building. These include windows have no sills, openings have no doors, roofs do not enclose. From his work, we get a sense of ruin which are made from pieces of scraps. His work in the early 1990s explored the intersection of architecture and violence.

From these precedents I would like to incorporate Alexander Calder's idea to the character side of this project and Lebbus Woods to the environment aspect.
