PROJECT 2: Animated Tool - Precedent & Sketches

I started off by looking at different precedents and analysing their sculptures and images.

These are some of the concept sketches of my characters. I was inspired by some of the aspects of a spider and was trying to incorporate into my own design.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Final

Final Animation from Ififya on Vimeo.

Overall I am pretty happy with the outcome of my animation.

In Patricia Piccinini's work, she shows a friendly relationship between two objects or figures. From this, I went opposite direction which was creating a conflict between two objects. By transforming its size and form shows more intensity and interesting. I was quite inspired by Piccinini's glossy colours where it really highlights and add characteristics to the objects, therefore I used car paint on my objects. On top of that, I added patterns to create a more funky look and correspond to the movement of the objects.

Next time I really need to consider render settings and time because it took ridiculously long and I used ridiculous amount of computers to render my frames.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Final Renders

Final Renders took bloody ages!!!

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Problems

There were issues when doing this project. Audio and animation would not play when I modified the objects and it would only play when I reopen the program. I had to animate while looking at the waveform which was annoying and time consuming and had to reopen the program several times to watch the overall animation.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Texture

Firstly I used car paint to give a glossy look because I wanted to relate to my precedent. It also gives a smooth look. Since this project focuses on the materiality, I had to apply some sort of change in textures. I used swirls for one of the sphere and wave for the other. The animated textures reinforces the movement's of the objects.

The following images show different patterns, highlights, materials and colours at different scenes.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Test Renders

These are just few test renders to see textures.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Camera

To make the story more exciting and interesting I decided to add a camera. It was quite hard to figure out which angle I wanted to portray the objects since there were so many ways I could have approached it. Also the shots had to support the flow of the sound. I looked at several videos to get some ideas on angles.

I was inspired by this video, even though the movements were very fast.

I played around with different angles e.g. low angles to portray power, close ups to show the details of the materials.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Development

I finalized my idea and storyboard to portray a conflict between two objects. Same modifers were applied but this time another sphere was added. A lot of tweaking and adjusting were done on the models to create different movements and forms. Also lights were added to highlight the objects and create shadows.

The following images show the progress of the story.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Animation

This is an animation of sphere transforming into this radical shape and eventually it melts.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Audio 2

In order to animate, sound was placed. Thanks to my friend Jerry Tu I was able to get different samples of the instruments that were used in his music. In doing so, movements were produced according to different instruments. Still I had to edit the audio to fit with the movement of the sphere.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Modelling

So I started off by using a sphere and tried using different modifiers to transform the shapes.

PROJECT 1: Relative Materiality - Precedents

I have looked at different precedents from the list. Each of them had it's own unique expressions and aspects about themselves. In Gordon Matta-Clark's work, he would cut slits or shaped holes right through an apartment until you can see through from one end to another. This created a sense of space which was related to a subway passage. I found Patricia Piccinini's featured works (Nest, The Stags and Thicker than Water) very interesting. The way she creatively warped and curled these automotive into living forms, make her works unique. Also the use of colours on her work support the forms.
